Security : Who is Responsible
All to often the percieved rise in crime rate is blamed on the local law enforcement agencies. This attitude can be both inaccurate and unhelpful. Personal security is the responsibility of every individual.
Local police forces have many duties , including
Investigating crimes
Locating missing persons
Answering domestic complaints
Testifying in court
Crime prevention
Writing reports
Attending public meetings
Accident investigation
Crime prevention is just one of the tasks local police are expected to complete so it is obvious that the work involved in preventing crime and increasing security awareness is something that should be shared by the local community.
For the most part local police rely on criminal paranoia and rapid response to deter crime and prevent loss but yet again the police cannot fully control the response time. It depends on.
The time from when the incident occured to when it's discovered
The time from the incident's discovery to when it's reported
How busy the police are when the crime is reported
The distance the police have to travel.
The bottom line is, local police have a lot of people to look after, spread over large areas and in a time of budget cuts it is unrealistic to expect local security personnel to keep an individual watch on you and your property.
It is reasonable to expect that with some help and guidance on security matters from the local police you can greatly reduce your chances of suffering loss. Your home security plan should be based on combined and coordinated efforts with neighbours and local police.
Neighborough Watch is one scheme that has proved to be both popular and effective.
