Your neighborsmay have a different routine or working pattern to yourself and therefor maybe aware of activity that you are unabable to observe yourself. For example a stay at home mom will probably have a good idea about what happens in your area during the day.

For example finding out that there have been three burglaries in your area over the past month will probably not help you a great deal. It is important to know at what time of day they took place, what type of goods were stolen, have the police made any arrests. By getting information like this you can see if there are any patterns and if your own personal routine leaves you vunerable to those patterns.

After analysing the data it should become apparent where there are security weaknesses and problems, the general security conditions of your home's construction and location and the history and nature of security problems in your area. At this stage you should know three things.
- What security problems you are most likely to encounter
- How are those problems likely to happen
- How bad are they likely to be, that is how much control is available to stop or minimise the problems
