There is no one security solution that can be applied to every household or business. It is up to each of us to proactively assess our security requirements and take the necessary actions on completion of that assessment. A well structured assessment lets you tailor your security system to fit your needs, you get a safer, more effective system and you lessen the chance of wasting time and money on security cameras that are not suitable for your requirements.

After completing the assesment you will have a prioritised list of security issues that your home security system should address.

A security risk assessment is something that you can complete yourself .All you need to do is observe and analyse your habits, your home, your community and your local law enforcement agencies.

Security Assessment : Step 1

At this stage of the security assessment your will be concerned with gathering general information regarding your neighborhood.

Personal Observation
Take notes on the genearl location, condition and setting of your home. Include your personal habits and daily routines, the general nature of the area you live in , its history of crimes and it's proximity to the police.

For example your house may be located on a corner and prone to the congregation of youths during the Summer months.

Talk to the Police
By talking to thelocal police you can get an idea of potential and current "hot spots" of crime. For examplethey will have a record of any car thefts or burglaries in your area.

Talk with Your Neighbors
Your neighborsmay have a different routine or working pattern to yourself and therefor maybe aware of activity that you are unabable to observe yourself. For example a stay at home mom will probably have a good idea about what happens in your area during the day.

For example finding out that there have been three burglaries in your area over the past month will probably not help you a great deal. It is important to know at what time of day they took place, what type of goods were stolen, have the police made any arrests. By getting information like this you can see if there are any patterns and if your own personal routine leaves you vunerable to those patterns.

Security Assessmet : Step 3

After analysing the data it should become apparent where there are security weaknesses and problems, the general security conditions of your home's construction and location and the history and nature of security problems in your area. At this stage you should know three things.

• What security problems you are most likely to encounter
• How are those problems likely to happen
• How bad are they likely to be, that is how much control is available to stop or minimise the problems

At this stage of your security risk assessment it should be possible to prioritise a list of security issues that your plan must address.
